Russia and Belarus - Blog #7
The ban of Russia and Belarus from the past few Paralympics is a topic that I agree and disagree with on different levels. I understand that the IPC has gone through a lot to keep its games up and running since COVID-19 in 2021. They are trying to continue to do anything to keep the games going. From a political standpoint, I understand why the IPC is trying to avoid further conflict by allowing Russia and Belarus to continue to represent their country in the Paralympic Games with everything that’s going on. As long as there is active conflict or war going on between Russia and Belarus, I do think that the IPC is making the correct decision to not allow them to represent their countries in the Paralympic games. I don’t think that they should remove all Russians and Belarus and NPCs from being able to participate in future events. I liked the idea that they talked about in the Paralympic article, where they discussed that Russian and Belarus athletes will be allowed to compete as neutral athletes in the upcoming 2024 games. The IPC is still giving athletes the ability to compete in the games, but still upholding their rules of not allowing them to represent their Russian and Belarus countries. Once the war is over, I do think that the IPC should reevaluate its decision and come to a conclusion with the issue.
With the wars going on, I don’t think that they should be holding international games in Russia and Belarus. Although if Russia and Polaris wanted to host their own Paralympic games, they could open the doors to athletes all around the world and see if athletes would be willing to come over and participate in their games although I think that would be slim to none at this rate. I do think that athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus should be able to participate in sports outside of their countries as long as they remain neutral athletes, especially with the new rules that the IPC has in place in regard to Russian and Belarus athletes competing. at the end of the day, I understand that the majority of the athletes that want to participate from Russia and Baris have nothing to do directly with the war, but as a country, we do not agree as a collective with what Russia has done to Ukraine. I understand why the IPC and other athletes competing in the games do not want Russia and Belarus to be able to advertise their Country internationally, knowing everything that is going on with the war. that’s why I really like the idea of allowing the athletes from those countries to be able to compete individually or neutrally to be able to still play the sport they love without having the country they come from represent them or the people watching the games judge them because of the country they come from.
