Inclusivity - Blog #6

I understand the idea of classification for disabled people who wish to participate in sports. Not only is it for their safety to make sure that they are getting into a sport that their disability can handle but it isn't going to to further any issues related to their disability. Secondly, the different classification and levels that the athlete is placed under is to make sure that they are competing with other athletes with the same or similar disabilities to ensure there is somewhat similar competition. I do believe that regardless of the disability, as long as the athlete is physically able to perform into a classification they should be able to qualify. They do have 10 different classifications for athletes to be able to test into. In the video for the New Zealand Paralympics, they were able to show how these athletes get tested for classification and I agree with this process in order to ensure the athletes' safety and make sure that they are going to be put into a group with other people who are at somewhat of the same level of performance they are. Anyone shouldn't be able to just walk in and get put on the Olympic team if they can't post numbers that other Olympic athletes are posting. There are different levels of expertise in sports for a reason, I wouldn't be able to walk onto a field and play NFL football because I have never played a day in my life.

I think that Paralympic sports only allow a certain amount of disabilities to be able to perform in the sports, which isn’t fair to the rest of the people who may not fall under any of those categories to qualify. Paralympic sports should be all of the athletes' classifications based on the numbers that they can produce from their performance. even if somebody’s disability does not fall under any of the categories within the Paralympics, they should be given the chance to be evaluated by a medical professional, to be able to possibly classify under one of their leagues in the Paralympics. Even though it’s not foolproof, everyone plans to create an even playing field for all of the athletes with disabilities to be able to participate in the sport they want to play. We wouldn’t let a rookie baseball player get into a D1 college and be able to take the pitching spot from the D1 player because the rookie can’t put out the same numbers that the D1 baseball player does. although, all of the disabled athletes that wish to play in the Paralympic games, should be allowed to test into different levels of classification for their sport
