On the first day of class, I didn’t even know what the word Paralympics meant. Over the course of the semester, I have learned so much about disabilities and sports, and how much they mean to the athletes that play them. Disabled athletes. on the first day of class, I didn’t even know what the word Paralympics meant. Over the course of the semester, I have learned so much about disabilities and sports, and how much they mean to the athletes that play them. Disabled athletes enable bodied athletes all have one thing in common, and that’s to play the sport they love. At the beginning of the class, I always thought that things like the Special Olympics in the Paralympics were just shows put on to make disabled people feel included when in reality these games are here so that disabled athletes have the opportunity to show and perfect their craft to the rest of the world. These games are here so that disabled athletes can show the rest of the world that they aren’t just a statistic and that they strive for so much more than that.
This class has also taught me that disability has a huge impact on society, and how society views disabled people. Society has such a black-and-white perspective when it comes to disabled people especially disabled people in sports. in the future, I would like to voice my perspective to people who have this mindset and try and change the way they view disability, and how people with disabilities want to be a part of society, instead of being a niche or a little component in society. everyone deserves to be an equal player in our society, and I would like to use the knowledge that I have now to be able to advocate for disabled people in sports and show that they aren’t here just because they want to be included they’re here because they want to play the sport just like everybody else. goes so much further than sports, because disabled people find themselves being disgusted by all aspects of society. As a collective, we need to have a better mindset about disabled people and how they want to be treated by anyone and everyone they come across. disabled people aren’t people that you have to feel bad for or feel like you have to have sympathy for because they most of the time don’t have sympathy for themselves. They just want to be equal to everybody else.
